Food and Beverage

Overview

The Food and Beverage industry is described as growing, canning, dehydrating, and freezing fruit and vegetables, corn processing, dairy, and meat and fish products. According to the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab Energy Efficiency Improvement Guide, over $200 billion worth of product is produced annually. The report states that 20% of the energy used to produce these results is consumed by pump systems.

The entire food chain in the Food and Beverage industry uses a number of systems while making it from the farm to our table. As a result, each step requires a tremendous amount of water and sanitizing fluids. It takes 600 gallons of water for a pound of cheese, a can of beer uses 30 gallons of water, and up to 700 gallons of water to process a gallon of milk. Steam and hot water distribution systems, and waste collection and treatment systems support all of these operations. Additionally, the Department of Energy (DOE) says that 20%-30% of all power consumed in support of these operations is for pump systems. In short, it takes a tremendous amount of energy to support all of the systems.
