Customer: Worldwide Industrial Gases Company
In June 2017, Engineered Software, Inc. was contacted by an international gas company intern seeking information on PIPE-FLO® Professional in hopes of highlighting the program’s capabilities in comparison to competitors.
The project was to demonstrate PIPE-FLO® in a GSS Plant Design to showcase how the use of one fluid flow analysis tool (PIPE-FLO®) could replace Plant Flo, Cool Drop, Del Liquid and Del Gas. With the help of Engineered Software’s sales and marketing team, the intern was able to demonstrate the pros and cons of PIPE-FLO®.
The customer had been using multiple programs and spreadsheets to perform their various calculations.
- Plant Flo for plant operations
- Cool Drop for heat exchanger and nitrogen losses
- Del Liquid for liquid transfer pressure drop calculations
- Del Gas for gaseous transfer pressure drop calculations
- Microsoft Excel for connecting everything together and miscellaneous calculations
The customer also wanted something to assist in the commissioning of new plants. The current process was laborious and cumbersome – potentially relying on iterations to balance the heat exchanger circuits and balancing valves.
The gradient color feature in PIPE-FLO® allows the colorization of the model based on over 20 different factors such as velocity, pressure, flow rate, and more. This allowed Praxair to quickly identify which portions of their plant were choke points, which sections were underutilized, and which sections could be used more efficiently. Figure 2 shows the model colorized by pressure drop so Praxair could visualize where the system had to overcome large pressure drops.
The reporting tool made communication a breeze between the engineers, managers, and operators. Praxair was able collect and share data on specific pipelines, or on the model. Creating customized reports allowed for templates which eliminated any confusion with the operations staff.
Easy reporting tools are demonstrated in the Pipeline Report Figure 3.
Based upon the results of their PIPE-FLO® model and the plant observation, the customer was able to model their plant prior to commissions and pre-determined value position for a balanced system. All systems tied together in one model enhanced accuracy and efficiency.
After 60 days of testing, modeling and utilizing PIPE-FLO®, the customer determined the software was valuable and incorporated it into their toolkit. PIPE-FLO® will be used in their Pennsylvania location and will expand as their fluid handling software needs increase.
