ESI Joins Energy Star LCIT Alliance
We're Making an Effort to Lower Our Carbon Footprint

Engineered Software, Inc. became an Ally of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR Low Carbon IT Campaign with a commitment to educate its customers about the benefits of power management, or sleep mode, on an organization's computers and monitors. Engineered Software's participation will help reduce the nation's growing demand for electricity, save organizations money and help fight global warming.

If all office computers and monitors in the U.S. were set to sleep when not being used, the country could save more than 44 billion kWh or $4 billion worth of electricity and avoid the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of about 5 million cars each year.

"We are proud to be part of the effort to reduce the carbon footprint of IT operations," said Carolyn Popp, President of Engineered Software, "The efficient use of computers and monitors is not just good for our users' bottom line, it’s good for the environment."

Ask an Engineer
Q. What is Choked Flow and when does it occur?

A. Choked flow is a condition that occurs in a valve when the static pressure of the liquid drops below the vapor pressure, causing the liquid to flash to a vapor. The vapor bubbles occupy more volume than the same mass of liquid, resulting in restriction of the flow through the valve.

When fully choked flow occurs, fluid flow through the valve will not increase when the downstream pressure is decreased. Choked flow results in high noise levels, vibration, pipe stress, and severe erosion and pitting of the valve seat and disc. Choked flow may result from an over-sized control valve or if an inappropriate type of valve is specified for a given application. Many of our customers have similar questions. Each month we will try to pick the most common question and address it here. If you have a question about piping systems, send your question to natalie@eng-software.com  with "Ask an Engineer" in the subject.

PIPE-FLO Feature of the Month
ESI is all a-twitter with the question "What are you doing?"

Engineered Software is Twitter-pated, and you can find us @EngSoftware on the Twitter scene! Those of you who don’t know what Twitter is, it’s a social networking and micro-blogging service. It’s another vehicle people and companies can use to communicate using short, text-based posts of up to 140 characters called “tweets.”

Over 8 million people in the U.S. alone are using it, and the growth has been steadily climbing. Not too shabby for a company that has only been around since 2006. You might be surprised to find some of your favorite companies and publications represented on there as well, so check it out! You can learn more about the Twitter startup company here http://twitter.com/about#about.

ESI plans to use Twitter for posting updates about our software, products, videos, interesting links, news, announcements, etc., but we also want you to tell us what you are doing. This is an interactive way of communicating, and could facilitate more of a two-way conversation. Not to be confused with our software support, but could possibly aid us in other areas of customer service.

ESI Around the Globe

We have a variety of training being held in late March and April, but we are having an onsite class in Burlington, Kansas on April 16-17 for a customized Piping System.

ESI will be sending representatives to the ACHEMA Trade Show in Frankfurt, Germany in May, and are starting to plan meetings during the show. If you will be attending the ACHEMA show and would like to meet with Ray Hardee, or Carolyn Popp, during the show, just send us an email to marketing@eng-software.com and we will set aside some time to speak with you about any of our products.
