New PEX Pipe Table Download Added

Your requests have been answered; we have a new pipe table for use in the PIPE-FLO and Flow of Fluids programs. The new piping table is for Cross linked Polyethylene (PEX) SDR9 Tubing. The table is based on the ASTM Standard F876 – 08a.

To download the new PEX pipe table, go here http://tinyurl.com/pipetable. Directions for installing the table into your software are included on the download page.

For the rest of the pipe tables available read this article http://tinyurl.com/allpipetables.

If you don’t see a pipe table that you want or use regularly, send us an email and tell us which type of piping we don’t have and we will get the ball rolling. You can also share your custom pipe tables and we may include them in the next release of our programs. Send your pipe table suggestions to support@eng-software.com with "Pipe Table" in the subject line.

Ask an Engineer
Q. What are Newtonian Fluids and Non-Newtonian Fluids, and how do I escape from quicksand?

A. A fluid is defined as a substance that undergoes continuous deformation when subjected to a shear stress. The resistance of the fluid to this deformation is ordinarily measured in terms of the fluid property called viscosity.

If you ever stumble into a pit of quicksand, its Non-Newtonian behavior is the reason why you will feel stuck by suction, and start to sink.

To learn the difference between the two types of fluids and learn the best way to escape from quicksand, should you find yourself stuck, read the rest of the article here: http://www.eng-software.com/e-newsletter/2009/ask0209.pdf

Many of our customers have similar questions. Each month we will try to pick the most common question and address it here. If you have a question about piping systems, send your question to natalie@eng-software.com  with "Ask an Engineer" in the subject.

Recession-proof your Career with Training

Recession proof your career with Fluid Fundamentals training. One of the biggest ways to increase your value to your employer is to increase your general knowledge. Be an expert and a generalist at the same time.

Knowing more than anyone else on a specific issue or topic will help make you the "go-to" person for anyone in the company who has a question on that subject. However, you also want to be well versed in many areas of your company so that managers see you as being able to contribute in a variety of ways.

By attending one of our classes on pumps or piping systems will allow you to be well-versed in not only those two specific areas but allow you to contribute in a variety of ways, such as system optimization, areas of potential energy savings, and redesign.

The Spring 2009 training schedule is now available here: http://tinyurl.com/9puvnz. Once there you will be able to select which class schedule you want to see.

For those of you who want to have specialized training at your own facilities, we also offer all our training as an onsite option. Call or email today for details on customizing your own classes today at 1-800-786-8545 or training@eng-software.com

PIPE-FLO Feature of the Month
New NFPA15 Valve & Fitting Table for use with Hazen-Williams Calculations

When using the Hazen-Williams method, the most accurate way to account for resistance due to valves and fittings is to add an equivalent length for the valve or fitting to the pipe length. Using this method and the NFPA 15 Standard, we created valves and fittings tables for two common pipe materials, Stainless Steel Pipe (ANSI B36.19M) and Welded and Seamless Wrought Steel Pipe (ANSI B36.10M).

To download the new Valves & Fittings Table, go here: http://www.eng-software.com/kb/item.aspx?article=1508. Directions for installing the table into your software are included on the download page.
